Cave Story is one of those freeware games which will make its way to the PSP soon, although there is still much work to be done on the graphics and length of gameplay before you see it flying off the shelves. Cave Story is currently being developed by Variant Interactive, and the entire team is targeting a release date sometime next year.
To begin, Cave Story features a young boy as the protagonist who wakes up one day inside some rocky tunnels (he must’ve had quite a lot to drink the night before to miss going home), who then decided to go around looking for clues to his whereabouts as well as identity. Must’ve been some pretty strong stuff he downed the night before then to suffer from a bout of amnesia.
It is not all fun and games underground, as a doctor 2 cents short of a full buck has used an enchanted crown to enslave a race of rabbit-like creatures, also known as Mimigas. Needless to say, the Mimigas won’t come by as furry and cute, but think more along the lines of mean-looking cannibals with a coat of fur.
Traveling throughout the caves while searching for an exit encounters in a meeting with Sue, a Mimiga who is different from others. The story develops from there, where presumably you will find your way home after helping free the Mimigas from the evil clutches of that mad doctor.
Do you think Sony will put in a whole lot of effort in terms of improvement for this freeware title? Would that drive you to purchase the released copy, or do you prefer to stick to downloading it?
